He lived his first four years in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky, where his father was the minister of a small-town Baptist church, before spending his formative years in Louisville, Kentucky. A graduate of Westport High School, he was a member of the original Hubbard Street Dance Company before leaving dance at 24 to hitchhike and hop freight trains across the country for over a decade.
